Frances, the wife of poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, died tragically on July 10, 1861. Her dress had caught fire the previous day in an accident involving a candle. Longfellow sank into a depression. For Christmas 1864, Longfellow penned the lines of “I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day,” one of the most famous Christmas carols:
